What our volunteers say

"Soon after I retired, I joined the Wokingham Volunteer Centre "Green and Tidy" gardening scheme. The induction process was very straightforward, and I was given training on the use of all the equipment, and later attended a First Aid course. Nearly three years later, I am still really enjoying the opportunity to help people who need work doing in their gardens, while getting fresh air and exercise. Not only that, all the volunteers I have met are very pleasant friendly people which makes our gardening sessions fun. I feel very fortunate to have this volunteering opportunity, it's a great scheme.

One comment from a client has stayed with me: "I've been looking forward to you coming all day". So it's not just getting lawns mowed or hedges trimmed, for many people on their own it's a chance to see visitors and have a chat.  It's also an opportunity for Libby and the other team leaders to talk to our clients and check that they are OK, or need any additional help and support."

"I enjoy my Tuesdays volunteering for Green 'n' Tidy.  There is something very satisfying about being outside in the fresh air, passing the time of day with the kind people who also volunteer whilst getting some good exercise gardening (and learning a bit about it along the way).  And of course there is the knowledge that you will have helped a small number of people who can no longer manage their garden themselves and that makes you feel useful.  I just hope there are schemes like Green 'n' Tidy when my turn comes."

"I would like to say from a volunteering view, how worthwhile I find the Green & Tidy scheme. The positives for me are working outside, keeping fit, being  part of a team, Carl making me laugh, meeting new people and getting to know far more of Wokingham than I ever have in 21 years of living here. Of course at the same time we are really providing a reliable trustworthy service. Thereby helping disabled and elderly residents in the area stay in their own homes, maintain access to their gardens, sometimes renew an old interest but mostly taking away the stress and worry when they can no longer physically or financially cope with the maintenance due to infirmity, age or often bereavement."

"I wanted to do some volunteering after my father passed away and when I came across an article about the Green ‘n’ Tidy Gardening Scheme it was just what I was looking for. The process of becoming a volunteer was straightforward, the team are very friendly and the scheme is well organised so we all know what we are doing each week. I really enjoy my weekly session as we work through the schedule making the gardens look neat and tidy for the clients.  It is still surprising and satisfying how a garden can be transformed in only half an hour when there are eight people working in it.  I particularly enjoy it if a client comes out into their garden to say hello and have a chat.  There was a lovely lady last time who spent the whole time in her garden chatting away to us whilst we were tidying. It just makes it that little bit more special when you are helping someone."

"I have found the volunteering to be very rewarding and I always go home happy that I have helped local people through my love of gardening."
